Artist Statement

“The soul never thinks without a mental image” Aristotle.

Ideas of consciousness and existence have wrapped themselves around mine in confounding circles for as long as I can remember.

Art is a way to give form to what I can’t understand. My interest lies in the imagery held within. In the traces of experiences imagined, real and re-imagined; those that belong, those placed there by others.

In my practice found objects and imagery are chosen because of the charge that they emanate, the traces they contain. The work emerges from a dialogue with the materials, an exploration of their materiality and meaning. My process involves drawing, printing, layering, casting and projecting. The emphasis is always on transparency, pushing through to what lies just beyond.

Graphite, oil and ink are used to generate marks that are deliberate, found and unintended; mediums are pushed to their edges, always threatening to dissolve.
